Once again, we would like to share this week’s lunch pictures with you. Yesterday, Thursday, February the 22nd, students were delighted by broccoli and boiled potatoes, fresh fish ‘fideua’, and seasonal fruit.
Broccoli is an exceptional nutritious vegetable, rich in vitamins and minerals. Moreover, it is from the cabbage family, high in fibre, low in calories, and with an antiseptic property. Did you know? Broccoli – and its whole cabbage family- contains substances which appear to be beneficial to combat mammary cancer. This is due to the neutralising effect it has against strogen which may cause the disease.
Boiling potatoes must be the oldest way to cook these tubers. Potatoes were also used by our ancestors to learn how to use fire, boiled potatoes galore! Since that time, homes have always had a pot full of water ready to boil potatoes. Potatoes can be eaten after sliced and boiled with some salt, or simply seasoned with some olive oil. However, they also are a great side for both fish and meat. Adding potatoes is a simple, yet effective way to elevate dished and everyone is content by the addition. Moreover, potatoes are also very healthy.
‘Fideua’ is a very popular dish in Valencian gastronomy. This speciality originated in Gandia, although it is typical in the whole Valencian community. Despite being a pasta dish, it has more to do with rice than with spaghetti. With its origin in the Grau Port in Gandia, ‘fideua’ is the creation of a ship cook who wanted to surprise his shipmates with some shellfish. In order to cook it, he has to follow all the steps for a rice dish to a T. However, when time came to add the rice, he realised that there was non left. So, he though quickly how to fix his dish. And he saw some spaghetti, which he chopped to smaller pieces and added it to the broth as if it was rice. The result was amazing! The final dish was so good it became popular in all the restaurants from the ports the ship anchored at. And thus, ‘fideua’ was created, from a very modest intention among fishermen.
