As a poverty law clinic, Keewaytinok focuses on areas of law such as tenant rights, welfare and disability. In addition, the clinic also assists community members with consumer rights, debts, Indigenous laws and wills. They provide summary advice in family law and criminal law. As a front-line service, they often provide recommendations for many other legal issues. Lee saw it with his own eyes over the summer when someone came and asked how to file a complaint against the local RCMP division. As one of the few legal service providers in Moosonee, the clinic orders and certifies many documents. Keewaytinok receives funding for her position as an arts student from Legal Aid and the Law Foundation of Ontario, but they do not receive money every year. The clinic has funding this year for a student expected to start in 2013, though it`s unclear when they`ll receive the next funding after that. The clinic employs its executive director, another lawyer, a municipal lawyer, an office manager and an art student. Keewaytinok has had several interns in recent years. While at the clinic, students do many things that other trainees do. They participate in client interviews, help prepare for hearings, conduct legal research, draft documents and answer the phone. In addition, articling students play a central role in the preparation and delivery of public legal education programs.
Due to the remote nature of working in the North, students also use the clinic`s satellite office and make home visits. In total, Keewaytinok serves an area where more than 10,000 people live. About half of these people come from Moosonee or Moose Factory, the rest come from various communities further north, such as Fort Severn, Kashechewan and Attawapiskat. Due to its location on the Moose River, Keewaytinok Native Legal Services is the only clinic in Ontario where you can`t drive from Toronto, and the only one located on a tidal river. There are many benefits to working in the unpolluted North in addition to a healthy lifestyle. The atmosphere of the clinic and the north bar is friendly and collegial.
